A passionate cyclist, Nicholas Cooper, has launched a unique clothing brand, Amo la Ruta, with a mission to make high-quality cycling gear more affordable for the community. But here's where it gets controversial: he's doing it through a membership model, an industry first!
Amo la Ruta, which translates to 'I love the route' in Spanish, was born out of Cooper's own cycling journey. After a life-altering incident in 2023, where he was hit by a drug-impaired driver, Cooper's racing career came to an abrupt end. During his 18-month rehabilitation, he realized that it wasn't just about the performance or the competition; it was the love for the sport and the routes that kept him going.
"Amo la Ruta is my way of giving back to the community that has given me so much," says Cooper. "I wanted to create a brand that is by the community, for the community."
The brand's membership model is designed to offer riders premium quality clothing at a fraction of the usual cost. Members enjoy discounts of up to 50% and additional perks like early access to new collections, priority stock, free shipping, and even a crash-replacement policy.
Amo la Ruta's winter collection, crafted with Italian fabrics, focuses on comfort, durability, and performance. From long-sleeve jerseys to bib tights and base layers, members can kit themselves out for the colder months at a significantly reduced price. For example, the Eterno bib tights, originally priced at £270, are available to members for just £140.
While some cycling brands offer similar membership or subscription models, they are still relatively rare in the industry. Rapha's Members' Club and Muc-Off's Ride Box are notable examples, but Amo la Ruta takes it a step further with its focus on community and accessibility.
Membership costs £79 for the year, a small price to pay for the savings and benefits on offer. Non-members can still purchase items at standard pricing, but they miss out on the discounts and perks that come with being part of the Amo la Ruta community.
So, what do you think of this innovative approach to cycling clothing pricing? Is it a game-changer or just another subscription model? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below. Will you be joining the Amo la Ruta community?
