Axel Bassani's Disagreement with Sam Lowes' WorldSBK Penalty: A Close Call for the Bimota Rider
Axel Bassani, a formidable force in the 2026 World Superbike season, secured a strong fourth-place finish in the opening round. However, his joy was tempered by a controversial penalty that threatened to derail his race.
During the race, Bassani, riding for Bimota, passed Sam Lowes for fourth place at turn four on lap two. The move involved heavy contact, and Bassani immediately turned around to apologize to Lowes as they exited the corner. Despite this, he managed to open up a one-second gap over Lowes before being handed a 'drop one position penalty'. This penalty not only cost him the position he had gained over Lowes but also the time he had accumulated since the pass.
Bassani, while understanding the penalty, was frustrated with its timing. He expressed his thoughts to WorldSBK.com, stating, 'It’s been not really good for the penalty, but it’s part of the game. Maybe one thing [is that] the penalty was right, but to arrive after three or four laps is not really good because already I had one second from the rider behind me so I had to lose a lot of time to give again the position.'
Despite the setback, Bassani maintained a positive outlook. He acknowledged the speed of his Bimota machine, stating, 'We can improve some parts, sure, but the speed is there, it’s in our hands, and we will try again tomorrow.'
The race result saw Bassani finish 0.036 seconds behind third-place Lorenzo Baldassarri, just missing out on a World Superbike podium as a Bimota rider. However, he remained unperturbed, attributing the loss to the penalty and the timing of his overtaking move. He added, 'I thought sometimes to try to overtake. I think [there was more to lose than gain]. So, I tried something in the last corner to arrive with more speed, but I knew it was impossible to overtake on the straight. But it’s part of the game.'
This incident raises questions about the timing and fairness of penalties in racing. It invites discussion on the balance between maintaining fair competition and allowing for aggressive, yet safe, overtaking maneuvers. What do you think?
