Bolton's Green Bin Initiative: A Springtime Solution for Gardeners (2026)

As spring approaches, many of us are eagerly anticipating the chance to step outside and spruce up our gardens. With this seasonal change comes an increase in garden waste, but there's a silver lining: households in Bolton now have the opportunity to request an additional green bin for their yard debris.

Last year, the council introduced an annual subscription service for an extra green bin, and many residents jumped at the chance to sign up. Now, each household can opt for a second 240-litre green bin for a fee of £37.50. This subscription will remain active until the end of March 2027.

For those enrolling in the service for the first time, there is an initial one-time fee of £35, which covers costs associated with administration, setup, and delivery.

Residents who registered last year will soon receive an email detailing how to renew their subscription for another year.

Here are some important details to keep in mind:

  • The additional garden waste bins will be collected every two weeks, coinciding with the schedule for the first free green bin.
  • As with all other recycling and waste containers, the extra bins are owned by Bolton Council.
  • Each additional bin will have a sticker for easy identification.
  • These extra bins are exclusively for garden waste (green), meaning no food waste can be placed in them.
  • During peak periods, it’s important to note that delivery of your new bin might take up to 4-6 weeks.

Cllr Richard Silvester, the Executive Cabinet Member for Environmental Services at Bolton Council, remarked, "Many residents embraced this service last year, finding it incredibly beneficial, especially for avid gardeners or those who quickly fill up their green bins. An extra green bin alleviates the hassle of having to visit local waste and recycling centers, saving both time and effort."

So, what do you think about the introduction of extra green bins? Is this a helpful service or merely an added expense for residents? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
