Environmental stress is wreaking havoc on global coffee production, sending prices soaring. According to a recent report, climate change is making coffee harder and more expensive to produce, impacting 97% of the world's coffee supply. The analysis, published by Climate Central, reveals that extreme weather in the main coffee-growing regions, known as the "bean belt," is causing significant harm. These regions, which produce the vast majority of the world's coffee, are experiencing more frequent heatwaves, with temperatures exceeding 30°C, a threshold that is harmful to coffee crops. The report found that the top five coffee-producing countries (Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Ethiopia, and Indonesia) face over 144 days of "coffee-harming heat" annually, a stark increase from pre-climate change days. This heat stress is causing coffee plants to divert resources, making them more susceptible to disease and reducing bean quality and yield. The situation is dire, with coffee prices in Canada skyrocketing. Since 2020, coffee prices have nearly doubled, and experts predict they won't stabilize due to high consumer demand. This trend is concerning, especially as coffee production may need to migrate to cooler regions, potentially leading to deforestation. As the world grapples with the consequences of climate change, the future of coffee production hangs in the balance.
