Frank Onyeka's Bundesliga Adventure and Nigeria's AFCON Dreams: A Brentford Matchday Exclusive!
Frank Onyeka, in a recent interview featured in the Brentford vs. Burnley matchday program, shared his experiences from the 2024/25 season while on loan with Bundesliga side Augsburg. He also touched upon his return to Brentford during a period of significant change and cast an eye toward the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria.
"People often say that in the Bundesliga, players run a lot compared to the Premier League." Onyeka revealed. "When I got there, I felt it. They always want to go forward with every ball." This is a key difference he observed between the two leagues.
"In the Premier League, teams know when to calm the game, when to move and when to play some passes before going forward; in Germany, teams just want to go forward at every opportunity." He explained, highlighting the Premier League's tactical nuances versus the Bundesliga's more direct approach. "It suited me really well; I love to go forward and track back. It was good for my game."
But here's where it gets interesting... Onyeka has a standout match with Augsburg. He fondly remembers the team's hard-fought 1-0 victory against Borussia Dortmund during the second half of the season.
"It was my first time playing there," he said, describing the iconic atmosphere. "The stadium, the yellow wall. I love those games. Dortmund was so loud - the fans are amazing. You could just feel the energy around the stadium."
"Some players are scared of that. Of course, you are nervous going into those games, but as time goes on you settle down."
"We came in as the underdogs, but with positive minds to win the game, and we won 1-0 from a set-piece."
"We beat them home and away. It was a good feeling."
