Here, boys and girls don purple overalls, embracing a shared mission: to learn and grow. The Smart Girls Foundation, supported by the Spotlight Initiative, is more than just a vocational training center; it's a sanctuary offering mental health support and a vision for a brighter future.
The foundation's unique approach focuses on trades typically dominated by men, like mechanics, engineering, and plumbing. By training young women in these fields, they're not only acquiring skills but also becoming role models, shattering stereotypes, and proving that gender is no barrier to success. Sumaya, a trainee, captures the essence of this transformation: "As a girl, now I can earn my own money. I don't need to beg from boys."
But here's where it gets controversial: the foundation's doors are open to all, including boys and individuals with disabilities. By educating everyone on reproductive rights, psychosocial support, and menstrual health, they're fostering an inclusive environment where biases can be challenged and broken.
After completing their training, students are placed in internships, many of which lead to permanent employment. This practical, job-ready training offers a pathway to economic independence, especially in a context like Uganda, where youth unemployment is a significant challenge.
Between 2023 and 2024, the Spotlight Initiative's efforts in Uganda reached over 26,000 people with life skills training. This holistic approach, combining vocational training with life skills education, is a powerful tool in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). It empowers young people, giving them the knowledge and confidence to advocate for themselves and break free from abusive situations.
Maria, a graduate of the Smart Girls Foundation, embodies this transformation. From selling spices in a local market to managing a company, her journey is a testament to the power of education and support. "I am strong. I am confident. I am an engineer," she declares.
