Iga Swiatek vs. Maria Sakkari: Doha Quarterfinals Preview | WTA Tennis (2026)

In a thrilling showdown at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, top-seeded Iga Swiatek from Poland successfully secured her place in the quarterfinals after a hard-fought three-set match against Australia's Daria Kasatkina on Wednesday in Doha.

Swiatek had dominated their previous encounters, never losing more than three games in a single set across their last six meetings on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz. However, the match took an unexpected turn early on as she built a promising 5-3 lead in the first set. Just when it seemed like she would maintain her winning streak, Kasatkina—a former world No. 8—mounted an impressive comeback, winning four consecutive games to clinch the first set 7-5.

Undeterred, Swiatek bounced back decisively, taking control of the next two sets and allowing Kasatkina to win only two games total, wrapping up the match with scores of 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 after 2 hours and 17 minutes of play. With this victory, Swiatek's record against Kasatkina improved to 7 wins and just 1 loss.

Throughout the match, Swiatek converted 44.4% of her break points (8 out of 18), while Kasatkina managed to convert 33.3% of hers (4 out of 12). The Australian struggled particularly with her second serve, winning only 24.1% of those points (7 out of 29).

Reflecting on the match, Swiatek remarked, "It wasn't an easy match. Even in the second and third sets, I had to work hard to win rallies against Daria. I felt like I could have done more in the first set. I didn’t adjust well to the colder conditions and the wind, so it’s definitely a lesson learned for the upcoming matches."

Swiatek has a remarkable history at the Doha tournament, having won the title for three consecutive years from 2022 to 2024. This marks her fifth time advancing to the quarterfinals here, a feat only matched by Petra Kvitova, Caroline Wozniacki, and Agnieszka Radwanska, who have all reached this stage six times.

The next challenge for Swiatek will be former world No. 3 Maria Sakkari, who triumphed over France’s Varvara Gracheva with a commanding score of 7-5, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals. This victory marks Sakkari's first string of three consecutive WTA main-draw wins since she reached the round of 16 in Madrid last year, and notably, it’s her first on hard courts since her impressive run to the final at Indian Wells two years ago.

Interestingly, Sakkari had a strong start in their past encounters, winning the first three matches between them in straight sets during 2021. However, Swiatek has turned the tide since then, claiming victory in their last four meetings, all also in straight sets, including a decisive 6-3, 6-2 win right here in the second round last year.

"Iga is incredibly solid but also very aggressive," Sakkari noted after her victory over Gracheva. "She has excellent ball movement and footwork on the court, making it difficult for opponents as she rarely makes unforced errors. Facing her will be a significant challenge. Our last encounter here yielded an easy scoreline, but it was far from an easy match, I must say."

On her end, Swiatek is ready and focused, entering the match with four consecutive victories against Sakkari. "Overall, I feel my game improved in 2022, allowing me to add more variety and push a bit harder," Swiatek explained. "However, competing against Maria is always tough; it feels like every game and every point carries immense weight."

What do you think about the dynamics between these two players? Do you believe Swiatek can maintain her winning streak against Sakkari, or is it time for a shift in their rivalry? Share your thoughts in the comments!
