A Belfast Home, 'The Gallery', Showcases Art and Personal Style
The Gallery, a south Belfast residence, has been named a finalist in the BBC's House of the Year competition. This unique home, filled with art, is one of 15 properties visited by interior designer and TV personality Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen for the BBC NI program.
Located near the Malone Road, The Gallery is owned by Bernard, a retired dental surgeon, and Sinead, a holistic therapist and counsellor. The house is an eclectic blend of art and design, with Bernard's love for art and Sinead's influence evident throughout.
"It's like a self-portrait," Bernard remarked, highlighting the personal nature of the home. Llewelyn-Bowen and his expert panel, including architect Jane Larmour, interior designer James Fairley, and Maven co-founder Patricia McGinnis, were impressed by The Gallery's unique style.
"There ain't going to be anything 'meh' in here," Llewelyn-Bowen exclaimed. The house features an open-plan layout with various functional areas seamlessly integrated. Downstairs, there's a music room with a grand piano, a spare bedroom with a sink, and a utility room. The upper level boasts a double-height ceiling, a main lounge, a kitchen with a hidden prep area, and a principal bedroom suite with a walk-in wardrobe and dressing area.
The art collection is a central theme, with Bernard prioritizing wall space for artwork. A Neil Shawcross painting serves as the centerpiece, and Bernard shares a personal story behind its acquisition. Sinead appreciates the serene atmosphere, especially the bath in the bedroom, allowing her to relax while Bernard plays the piano.
Bernard's love for Sinead influenced his design choices, creating a home he describes as Belfast's own Taj Mahal. The Gallery's unique blend of art, personal style, and functional design has made it a standout in the House of the Year competition.
