Long-Term Survivors of HIV Summit - Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future
The upcoming Long-Term Survivors of HIV Summit, themed "Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future", is being organized by the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) in collaboration with Ribbon – A Center of Excellence (USA), The Reunion Project (USA), and Realize (Canada). This significant event will take place in Sitges, Barcelona, from March 25 to March 28, 2026.
This summit is a three-day gathering that aims to unite thirty long-term survivors and nine lifetime survivors from Europe, North America, and beyond. Participants will engage in storytelling, meaningful dialogues, and collaborative efforts to collectively create a "Legacy Chest". This chest will consist of written and video narratives, reflections, and actionable recommendations that encapsulate the lived experiences of those aging with HIV. The ultimate goal is to convert these experiences into essential tools for advocacy, education, and systemic change.
Throughout the Summit, attendees will have the chance to discuss the specific needs of older populations living with HIV and explore innovative ways to meet these needs. Additionally, it will serve as a valuable platform for survivors to voice their perspectives, share challenges, and offer insights based on their journeys. This gathering not only aims to honor the stories of long-term survivors but also ensures that their experiences are preserved and acknowledged while paying tribute to those who have laid the groundwork for future generations.
After the conclusion of the Summit, EATG and its partner organizations will work to transform the narratives of long-term survivors into practical strategies aimed at improving health outcomes, reducing stigma, and showcasing the resilience of individuals who were once thought to be lost to the epidemic.
Background
Advancements in HIV treatment have dramatically altered the perception and management of the disease. What was once considered a fatal diagnosis has now evolved into a manageable chronic condition. As a result, many individuals diagnosed in the early years of the epidemic are now leading long, fulfilling lives as long-term survivors. This group, which includes members from Europe, the United States, and Canada, embodies a rich legacy of resilience, advocacy, and invaluable life experiences.
Nonetheless, the combination of aging and HIV brings forth distinct challenges. Long-term survivors and lifetime survivors possess crucial insights that can enhance advocacy through their personal stories:
* Managing Comorbidities: Older adults living with HIV are at a heightened risk for various age-related health issues, necessitating integrated and specialized care from healthcare professionals within hospitals, home settings, and community services.
* Addressing Mental Health: The enduring effects of stigma, trauma, and social isolation can lead to significant mental health issues that require customized support. The experiences shared by long-term and lifetime survivors regarding their journeys with HIV and mental health are vital in addressing multiple aspects of healthy survivorship.
* Combating Stigma: Despite advancements, stigma remains a barrier that affects access to healthcare, social support, and overall well-being. Long-term survivors provide compelling evidence that storytelling serves as a powerful tool in the fight against stigma and discrimination. By sharing their narratives, they not only find personal liberation but also create opportunities for others to learn and engage, thereby educating communities, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders alike.
* Navigating Systems: Healthcare and social support infrastructures often lack the necessary frameworks to cater specifically to the unique needs of individuals aging with HIV. The experiences of long-term survivors have played a crucial role in shaping care systems. Through their narratives, we can aid in developing roadmaps for others living with HIV, as well as for communities and healthcare providers.
