Netflix's Acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery: A Missed Opportunity for Gamers?
The Game's Not Worth the Candle?
In a surprising turn of events, Netflix, despite having its own gaming division, seemingly overlooked the value of Warner Bros. Discovery's (WBD) game business during its acquisition bid. This news has left many gamers and industry enthusiasts scratching their heads.
During a recent investor Q&A, Netflix co-CEO Gregory Peters made it clear that WBD's game operations were not a priority for the streaming giant. He stated, "While they've done some impressive work in the gaming space, we didn't assign any significant value to it from the start because, in the grand scheme, they're relatively minor players."
But here's where it gets controversial...
This statement might come as a blow to the developers behind games like Hogwarts Legacy, which, despite its success, was seemingly not considered a key asset by Netflix. Peters went on to say, "We're super excited about some of the properties they've built, like Hogwarts, which has been done quite well. We believe we can integrate these into our offerings. They have great studios and talented people, so there's definitely potential. But to be clear, we haven't factored this into our deal model."
For fans eagerly awaiting more Hogwarts Legacy content, this news is a bit of a downer. While the game's sequel was a top priority for Warner Bros. Games just a year ago, its DLC was reportedly canceled earlier this year, and it's highly unlikely that Netflix will prioritize the game's future now.
And this is the part most people miss...
The acquisition deal is not yet finalized, and Paramount has entered the fray, vying for WBD. If Paramount succeeds, its CEO has promised to make changes to CNN, which could have broader implications for media and entertainment.
So, what does this mean for gamers and the future of gaming content on Netflix? Will Netflix change its tune and recognize the value of WBD's gaming division? Or will this acquisition primarily focus on other aspects of WBD's business?
