Get ready, college basketball fans, because the game is changing! The Players Era Festival is shaking things up, and the stakes have never been higher. According to ESPN, the CEO, Seth Berger, has announced a massive NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) payout for the winners of the championship game.
Myron Medcalf, from ESPN, reported that the victors of the Wednesday showdown between Michigan and Gonzaga will be awarded an additional $1 million in NIL funds. That's on top of whatever they're already earning! But here's where it gets interesting: the losing team won't walk away empty-handed. They'll still pocket a cool $500,000. This makes it college basketball's first $1.5 million game!
And the generosity doesn't stop there. The winner of the third-place game between Tennessee and Kansas will snag a $300,000 NIL payout, while the losing team will still receive $200,000.
Berger emphasized that all 18 teams participating in this year's Players Era will receive an average of "over $1 million" in NIL compensation. The teams are required to engage in legitimate NIL ventures throughout the week, including activations, marketing services, and social media postings. Berger clarified that each athlete is compensated at a fair-market value. He carefully avoided labeling the event as a pay-for-play tournament.
Looking ahead to 2026, the field will expand to 32 teams. The Big 12 conference will contribute eight teams as part of a new $50 million equity partnership.
Berger also revealed that the event is already profitable in its second year. While the women's event, featuring South Carolina, Texas, UCLA, and Duke, is expected to lose money this year, he anticipates growth in the future.
Controversially, the format of the Players Era has caused some confusion among fans. The championship game matchup will be determined by margin of victory, record, point totals, and head-to-head records. Berger compared the format to an AAU event and stated that it won't change when the field expands. He believes the system will become more understandable to fans over time. He explained, "Every shot matters, every basket matters, every minute matters."
