Police Clamps Down on Illicit Forex Traders in Accra: 41 Arrested, GH¢1.2m Recovered (2026)

Illegal Forex Trading Crackdown in Accra: 41 Arrested, GH¢1.2 Million Seized – But Is This Enough to Stop the 'Abokyi' Trade?

In a bold move to curb the rampant illegal foreign exchange activities plundering Ghana's economy, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a series of high-profile operations, culminating in the arrest of 41 suspects and the seizure of a staggering GH¢1.2 million in cash. But here's where it gets controversial: while authorities celebrate these arrests, critics argue that the 'Abokyi' trade, a term colloquially used for street forex traders, is a symptom of deeper economic issues. Are these crackdowns addressing the root cause, or merely scratching the surface?

The latest operation, conducted jointly with the Bank of Ghana on December 9, 2025, targeted hotspots across Accra, including Tudu, Circle, the Airport area, and Cantonments. Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, Director-General of the CID, revealed that the suspects hailed from diverse nationalities, including Togo, Benin, Nigeria, and Ghana. The early morning raid, based on intelligence, initially netted 29 arrests, with a follow-up operation adding 12 more to the tally.

And this is the part most people miss: the seized cash wasn't just in Ghanaian cedis. The haul included 100,000 CFA francs, 3,383,570 Nigerian naira (with a significant portion held as e-cash on a Moneypoint machine), and $5,105 in US dollars. All recovered funds have been secured and will be handed over to the Bank of Ghana pending further investigations. Once completed, the suspects will face charges in court.

This isn't the first such operation. On November 20, 2025, a similar crackdown at Osu Oxford Street and Kwame Nkrumah Circle led to 28 arrests. Those suspects were granted police enquiry bail by the Accra Circuit Court. Since the campaign began in August 2025, a total of 90 suspects have been arrested, with 13 already charged and arraigned.

COP Donkor emphasized that these operations are part of a nationwide effort to sanitize the foreign exchange market and enforce compliance with Ghana's financial regulations. Speaking on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, she thanked the Bank of Ghana for their collaboration. But the question remains: is this enough?

While authorities warn illegal traders of imminent arrest and prosecution, urging the public to conduct forex transactions exclusively through banks, the 'Abokyi' trade persists. Why? Some argue that the lack of accessible formal banking services and the allure of quick profits drive many into this illicit activity. Others point to the broader economic challenges facing Ghana, suggesting that until these are addressed, the problem will persist.

The crackdown is set to expand beyond Accra, with unlicensed forex traders across all regions facing arrest. Those interested in legitimate forex trading are urged to obtain the necessary licenses from the Bank of Ghana. But as the operations intensify, one can't help but wonder: Is this a sustainable solution, or merely a band-aid on a much larger wound?
