He described this team of coaches as a fantastic blend of youthful energy and seasoned experience, noting, "They’re all very experienced even though they’re relatively young."
But here's where it gets interesting... Weiss also touched on the delicate balance the team strikes between cutting-edge analytics and invaluable on-field experience. He praised the GM's approach, stating, "I think we’ve always done a real good job here... [We’re always trying to] find the sweet spot between the information that’s available to us now and the tech that’s to us now and combining that with the wisdom that comes from being in uniform for a long period of time." This philosophy, he believes, is perfectly embodied by the new coaching staff, creating a truly "great feeling."
Weiss's excitement for the season ahead was infectious. "I’m excited for this year and I’m excited to go to battle with this group of guys," he exclaimed. He lauded the team's talent, their daily dedication, competitive spirit, and diligent preparation, admitting, "So that makes my life a little easier. A lot of good vibes right now."
When the conversation turned to the pitching staff, particularly concerning health, Weiss remained optimistic, even with early setbacks. While Spencer Schwellenbach was already sidelined, Hurston Waldrep recently joined him due to "loose bodies" in his elbow. And this is the part most people miss... Weiss emphasized that pitching health is a concern for every team in the league. He offered a reassuring update on key pitchers Spencer Strider and Reynaldo López, stating they are both in "a really good place" and "full steam ahead." Weiss also highlighted the team's openness to internal talent stepping up. "Everyone deals with this stuff and it usually creates some kind of opportunity for somebody else," he explained. He pointed to the example of Schwellenbach, who unexpectedly made his mark at the big league level, underscoring the unpredictable nature of baseball and the potential for unheralded players to shine.
The buzz around Ronald Acuña Jr. is undeniable! Weiss shared a glowing update on the star outfielder, who appears to be in peak condition and eager to return. "I asked Ronald that same question when I first saw him... and he said ‘Amazing,’ and he looks great," Weiss reported. He believes Acuña's presence, when healthy and performing at his usual elite level, is a significant game-changer for the team. "He’s running around the outfield really well. He looks like Ronald."
Reflecting on his past managerial experience with the Colorado Rockies (2013-2016), Weiss contrasted it with his current role. "I learned a lot in Colorado. The two situations are worlds apart," he stated. He admitted to being somewhat unprepared for his first managerial gig, learning "on the fly." However, he felt good about the cultural changes made during his tenure. "I was going into that one kind of blind," he continued. "This one is very different. I’ve been here for eight years, I know the core of this team very well, I know Alex very well and his team so this time, I could come to spring training and really hit the ground running."
