Bo Bassett’s journey is far from over, but one thing is clear: he wants the UFC to be part of his legacy. At 18, Bassett has dominated the wrestling scene at Bishop McCort Catholic High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, boasting an undefeated record, relentless cardio, and a pace that’s left opponents in the dust. Ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2026, he’s already made waves on the national and international stages with high-profile wins against notable competitors.
Initially committed to the University of Iowa, Bassett made a surprising switch to Virginia Tech—a decision he didn’t take lightly. And this is the part most people miss: the recruiting process was a whirlwind of missed calls, texts, and tough family discussions. ‘It was a whole family decision,’ Bassett told MMA Junkie. ‘We started off going one way, and then we had to make a big decision. It took a lot of guts to decommit from Iowa, but now we’re home at Virginia Tech. I’m in an amazing situation, and I’m excited to keep it rolling.’
Before stepping into the cage, Bassett has his eyes on the 2028 Olympics. Currently in his final year of high school, he’s balancing academics, wrestling, and building a personal brand through social media. ‘Competing is one thing, but training and trying to build your brand is another,’ he explained. ‘Social media has been huge, and competing in college and senior-level tournaments has really helped. Consistent hard work is the foundation.’
What’s remarkable is Bassett’s ability to handle pressure and criticism at such a young age. Born in Western Pennsylvania, the heart of wrestling country, he’s always competed at the highest levels. Now, the 2028 Olympics are on his radar, likely in the bantamweight division. ‘2028 is coming up, and I’m on track to win that spot,’ he said. ‘Competing for Virginia Tech, getting my degree, and then transitioning to the UFC—there couldn’t be a better dream.’
Recently, Bassett spent time at Kill Cliff FC in Deerfield Beach, Florida, rubbing shoulders with MMA legends like Robbie Lawler and Gilbert Burns, as well as rising stars like Jordan Oliver. ‘It was awesome to train with these guys,’ he said. ‘I have a lot to learn, but my wrestling background will make the transition easier. I’m excited to keep moving forward.’
But here’s the controversial part: while many wrestlers stay in their lane due to financial incentives, Bassett insists his UFC aspirations are genuine. A conversation with UFC star Michael Chandler reinforced this. ‘I’m pretty set on it,’ Bassett said. ‘Being around guys like Jordan Oliver and hearing about Chandler’s journey—he didn’t start boxing until his 20s—has kept me motivated. I definitely see myself making that transition.’
